[Maria-docs] KB Macro Proposal

All, Based on an IRC discussion from yesterday, I whipped up a prototype of a couple of macros for use in code examples. The macros would be <<input>> and <<output>> and would be used almost the same way as the <<code>> macro (the main difference being that they cannot be used "inline"). For example: <<input lang=sql>> SELECT * FROM t1 WHERE d LIKE "%es%"; <</input>> <<output>> +-----------+ | d | +-----------+ | Tuesday | | Wednesday | +-----------+ <</output>> I've created a couple of prototypes (screenshots attached) of how it could look (hopefully the list will allow the attachements). I like v1 better, but I'm not enough of a css guru to know how to get the overflow to work right (I like v2 as well). The idea is to be able to easily indicate input and expected output for SQL (and other) examples and have it be consistent across pages in the KB. [Maria-docs] Request: "Save and continue editing" button in KB

Hello, I think the KB article editor needs a "Save and continue editing" button, like it is done in WordPress. The reasons are: 1. A browser may loose text in edit boxes, so one is better is to save often. 2. Preview pane is below the text, so one cannot look at both; I end up having two side-by-side browser windows, one for viewing the original/changed article, and the other one for editing. For both reasons #1 and #2, when I press "save", most of the time I have to immediately press "Edit" to get back to editing (and then, in most cases, find the part of the text that I was editing before pressing "save"). Having "Save and continue editing" would eliminate the need to go back-and-forth and simplify editing for most users, I think. I don't know if this is the best way to let you know... next time should I add a comment to the task page, instead? Federico

[Maria-docs] Stub content on KB?

Hi all, What are your thoughts on adding stub articles/sections to the KB? For example, adding an article for how to specify account names without actually writing the content, along with a note to whoever comes along about what the article should contain. I've seen stubs work well in other docs efforts. They're an easy way for contributors to cherry pick work. But with the "everything is always published" model of a wiki-like KB, stubs can be annoying to average readers, like a 90s-esque "under construction" banner. Thoughts? -- Shaun

I just noticed that there are links to share pages on Twitter, Facebook, and Google+ on the Source and History pages for each page, but seemingly not on the main page. http://kb.askmonty.org/en/drop-user http://kb.askmonty.org/en/drop-user/source/ That seems backwards. Is this the case for anyone else, or is my browser doing something strange? -- Shaun

[Maria-docs] Split CREATE FUNCTION/PROCEDURE?

Right now, the CREATE PROCEDURE page details CREATE PROCEDURE and CREATE FUNCTION (the non-UDF form). The CREATE FUNCTION page is just links to CREATE PROCEDURE and CREATE FUNCTION UDF. http://kb.askmonty.org/en/create-function http://kb.askmonty.org/en/create-procedure http://kb.askmonty.org/en/create-function-udf Aside from sharing some syntax, creating functions and procedures are two very different things. I propose splitting the FUNCTION stuff out of CREATE PROCEDURE and putting on CREATE FUNCTION. Thoughts? -- Shaun

How are parent categories set for articles in the KB? For example, this page has two parents: http://kb.askmonty.org/en/rename-table But I don't see on the edit page how those parents are set. I think the CREATE TABLE page ought to be under "Table commands" as well as CREATE, but I don't know how to do that. Also, when a page has multiple parents, the bread crumbs at the top only reflect one parent. Is there a primary parent? Why not show them for each parent? The bread crumbs are much more visible than the small Parents links in the sidebar. (The downside is that you have to deal with multiple parents of all ancestors, which can lead to an explosion of links if you're not careful with categorization.) -- Shaun

[Maria-docs] TODO Tracking

Hi all, I've been accumulating a pretty big list of things to do in the KB. To get more people involved, and people working together, it's really important to get these things public. A prominent "Contribute" page could link to the list, giving people a sense of what they can do. Two options: 1) Keep a list of stuff in a wiki. The KB itself is a wiki, so the list could go write in the KB. 2) Use an issue tracker. We could use LP, since everything else is happening there anyway. We'd have to create a project on LP. I don't know how happy LP is with projects that aren't backed by an actual bzr repository. Thoughts?

[Maria-docs] MariaDB 5.2.10

All, The MariaDB 5.2.10 release is just about ready to go. Most of the packages have been mirrored. We're still waiting on Windows packages (we're having some issues with the Windows build server), but they will hopefully be available soon. This brings up the question: Should we delay the release until we have Windows packages or add them after the fact?
