Hello, A new question has been asked in "Getting, Installing, and Upgrading MariaDB" by Christine.Ross. Please answer it at http://mariadb.com/kb/en/migrating-mysql-5519-to-mariadb-with-encryption/ as the person asking the question may not be subscribed to the mailing list. -------------------------------- I am currently running mysql 5.5.19 64bit, Innodb, on Sparc Solaris and looking to move to mariadb on linux. Our ultimate goal is to have encrypted data-at-rest. I have 2 questions please. 1) So from my research I see I should be able to install mariadb 10.0 and run mysql_upgrade. Since the database exists already, do you just specify the location of the database when you install and it will upgrade it to mysqldb 10.0 when I run mysql_upgrade? 2) To achieve encryption, do I just install 10.1.4 on the same machine and run mysql_upgrade after making the changes to my.cnf. I know there are other my.cnf options but will this encrypt all the tables and logs? Does it do system tables please? I use the 1.0.5 version of MariaDB ODBC connector and the 10.1.1 version of MariaDB (I don’t want to use a MySQL ODBC connector). If I try only with a SELECT * it works but from the moment I use the ORDER BY Access freezes for a while and then stops running. The UPDATE queries work fine. I am researching porting to mariadb. Our primary servers function in a master-master configuration, with real-time updates when changes are made on either server. I see docs describing master-slave and some posts about master-master. Do I have to install the galera cluster to maintain this master-master setup please or can I just install mariadb on each server and set the my.cnf files as I currently have them with different server-IDs please? [Maria-discuss] JSON in MySQL and MariaDB

I wonder if someone are able to summarize differences (and similarities - if any ;-) ) between MariaDB and MySQL as regards JSON. I a not really able to structure it myself. MySQL has introduced the JSON datatype https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.7/en/json.html. I don' tbelieve it is availale in MariaDB. The slides here http://www.slideshare.net/blueskarlsson/using-json-with-mariadb-and-mysql tell that dynamic columns should be used with JSON and MariaDB. Also how much do the functions in both servers for manipulating JSON differ? Are they just named diferently in some cases but doing basically the same? What manipultion options does one have that the other has not (and vice versa). Also :does MariaDB have any plans to move closer to MySQL in 10.2 (such as introducing the JSON datatype and related syntax and funtionalities, for instance)? We would like to add JSON handling capabilites in our (SQLyog) GUI client soon. But the 'uneven' implementation in MariaDB and MySQL is indeed a problem. Recently I'd like to connect log4j2 to MariaDB database via MariaDB Connector/J (version 1.3.5, but tested each other). I could not do that and I found that reason is in connector - MariaDbServerPreparedStatement class does not implement method setNString and AbstractMariaDbPreparedStatement class throws exception "NStrings not supported". Why it is not supported. MariaDB does not support such type or it is just a bug? When I copied code form setString method to setNString then everything works properly. I'm using a Galera cluster (MariaDB 10.1.11) and have innodb_file_format=Barracuda set on all my servers, I've rebooted the servers and exported a database with phpmyadmin. After this I deleted the database and recreated it and then imported the previously exported .sql file with phpmyadmin. I checked the file format in INFORMATION_SCHEMA.INNODB_SYS_TABLES and found that it's still set as Antelope. Why is it not set to Barracuda? The MariaDB JIRA instance that currently is in use for project and issue tracking will change. The current instance is hosted in Atlassian's cloud and it has worked well, but we have hit the maximum user limit of 2000 users. It's fantastic to see how many of you actually report bugs and other issues in the MariaDB project! To hit that limit also means that we have to migrate over to a self-hosted instance of JIRA. Below are important details about that change. When will the switch happen: Sat 27th of Feb What is the impact for me as a user of MariaDB's JIRA: 1. URL change - The current instance is hosted in Atalassian's cloud and has the URL mariadb.atlassian.net. The new one will be found at jira.mariadb.org starting from 28th of Feb. 2. RSS feeds - If you have been using JIRA's RSS feeds, you'll need to set up them again since the URL is changing What will happen to old JIRA: The mariadb.atlassian.net JIRA instance will be put into read-only mode and a banner will be visible on each page telling the URL of the new MariaDB JIRA instance. Hi All Running Mariadb 10.0.16 and need to add a timestamp column to a table with has around 60m rows Testing on lesser hardware instances suggest around 40 minutes to make this change on the production system. To reduce the down time I was planning to alter the slave and role swap the slave to become the master I have added the column to a test slave and notice it alway populates as Unix_epoch 0 ie no current timestamp date | timestamp 2016-01-29 | 0000-00-00 00:00:00 This sounds about right, but to confirm it's not a bug. Other than the timestamp value not being correct up to that time of making any changes, which is acceptable for why it is being added, like the role swap, is there any things to be concerned about if I follow that as an approach? The role swap was needing to be done soon anyway so that in itself isn't a stumpling block I know Percona has their tools that allow online schema changes, I have never used it in anger to achieve this sort of change. We are using standard sysbench compex-OLAP, 10 million records. Performance of read-only queries is about 3k TPS and is quite stable. But then we run for a while read-write version and after it once again read-only version, then in this case performance starts to grow from 4k till 10k TPS. 10K TPS is reached after about 30 seconds of running benchmark and stays at this level. But if we stop benchmark and restart it, then once again speed falls down to 3k TPS. Data is located in temporary file system, so disk is not involved at all. We used recommended configuration settings for MariaDB and Galera. Also the same behavior is observed with standalone mysql without Galera: performance of read-only queries varies from 3k to 6k TPS (but high values are smaller than with Galera, although no load balancing was performed). Is there any explanation of such behavior and where we can look trying to understand the reason? Why performance of standalone mysql can be slower than on Galera cluster? Hello list, i have a strange problem with inserts. The tables is large (time series data) and has a lot of partitions, engine is IMMODB. We have notice that the write performance decreases with time, start of the month good, end of the month bad. The same behavier is the lasted version of mariadb. But when i replace mariadb with mysql the problems vanishes (so its not a hardware issue). I suspect that it is a caching problem but a comparison of the configs did not give a hint. Anyone an idea what may cause the effect ? re, wh

The servers are located in different datacenters and have a network latency of ~6 ms. Previously I found that I couldn't do a database dump or optimize, because the job would hang and took the cluster down with it. This issue was caused by flow control, it has been fixed by increasing the gcs.fc_limit. I currently have the problem that I can't run a optimize job for databases. For example: mysqlcheck --auto-repair --optimize --databases joomla The optimize job runs fine on the server I execute the job on and finishes in about 10 seconds. Let's call the server that executes this job the "master server". This doesn't happen on the "master" server, which continues to work like nothing happened. I've found that this issue doesn't happen when I run a optimize job for one single table. I believe the issue is that the operation for a entire database is to resource intensive or takes to long to finish. So all the nodes in both clusters remains in sync. There are multiple applications running on both sites and uses their site cluster continuously. Meaning that continuous read/write is perform. 1. When one node reboots in one of the cluster, what would be the order of operations, data sync -> replication or replication -> data sync ? 2. When network connectivity of one of the node of the cluster is lost, when network connectivity is restored, will data sync happen correctly ? 3. As replication is configured in both clusters and they replicate to each other, is there any chance of getting stuck in indefinite replication ? I mean cluster1 replicates to cluster2 and cluster2 replicates to cluster1. 4. In case link between cluster goes down for days, when link is restored, will the data sync happened correctly ? 5. I have an almost fresh Win10 installation with MariaDB 10.1.9 installed with .msi installer from this link (I believe) https://downloads.mariadb.org/interstitial/mariadb-10.0.21/win32-packages/m…. No older version has been installed on this system ever. The folder C:\Program Files\MariaDB 10.1\include\mysql and its subfolders have a large number of ".h" files. Hi Guys, quick question about lock tables with replication... I basically use it to achieve atomicity of some database writes, but it seems that queries like LOCK TABLES ___tsc WRITE UNLOCK TABLES are not replicated to slave. Eg. i can lock table on master, for write, but still read from it on the slave, which could lead to issues... We're reading some data from slaves, and writing data to it atomically using LOCK TABLES, it seems that this way will lead to race conditions and inconsistent reads from the slave. Any way of having aria/myisam writes to be atomic on the slaves too? I thought to copy the table to random temporary name, do the changes and then rename... but it seems like not very optimal. Thanks.

There is no other user connected to MariaDB, Looking at the workbench, i see InnoDB Buffer usage close to 87%, key Efficiency 100%, and Traffic 35KB/sec. as per current speed 2million rows an hour, its going to take 12 hours to load 24 million rows. When I run a a "mysqlcheck" or a "mysqldump" on my Mariadb 10.1.10 database server (which runs in a Galera cluster with two other servers) then the tasks stop after a short time and don't show any progress. The entire cluster seems to stall. For example the mysqldump stops after creating an 14,0 MB (14.760.912 bytes) dump file and doesn't proceed, even after several minutes nothing happens. The mysqlcheck to repair and optimize tables also hangs after checking a few tables. In both situations the cluster starts to have issues and the only way to get it to work normally again is by taking the server that executed the job offline and also taking another server offline. I then take them back online on by one and the cluster works normally again. I'm not sure what is causing these problems. Hi! I was playing around with indexes after we faced problems with mariadb choosing the wrong index because of high average value group size. So I created a table with 4 text columns and indexed the 4th column with a prefix length of 1. Following are the stats in brief -- The index has 35 unique values There are around 1040000 rows in total. this will give an average value group size of 29714 Cardinality is calculated as <no. of records in the index>/<average size of value groups>, thus it's value must be 35 BUT from show indexes, it's value is shown as 72 (innodb_stats_persistent_sample_pages = 9999999).

When I attempt to specify the column definitions for the DB2 table, and define the column as TEXT or BLOB, I receive the following error: SQL Error (1163): Storage engine CONNECT doesn't support BLOB/TEXT columns. Is there a way to CONNECT a DB2 table via ODBC or Direct Connection to a table that contains CLOB or Text defined columns? Hi all, I was wondering how can I change both change Mariadb and Galera (wsrep) syslog facility then make syslog logging in a separate logfile ? I've got another question, I have 3 galera nodes and one has local ip so it use NAT for communicating with other nodes. SST is alright because I set "wsrep_sst_receive_address" to public IP. But for IST it seems there is no parameters for that and I have some issues when nodes are transfering incremental snapshots in one way. How could I manage to do it ? I have begun reading about the differences, and that there's an upgrade procedure. Forgive the (likely) newb question, but was it totally necessary to create a new version of MariaDB for these changes? I mean, when 10.2 is released (and 10.3, 10.4 etc), is it going to be another whole new release with separate upgrade/versioning paths? Surely from a development management perspective this creates resource overheads for you? Will v10.0 cease development in the near future, to be replaced by v10.1? With the custom config file at: */etc/my.cnf.d/server.cnf* My datadisk is mounted over a lvm2 partition over two physical volumes, mounted on the path. */datadrive/galera/mysql* The logical volume only takes up 50% of the volume group as I leave the empty space for snapshot operations. This is reflected in my configuration as: *[mysqld]* *datadir = /datadrive/galera/mysql * *socket = /datadrive/galera/mysql/mysql.sock * Issue: -------- Coming to the issue at hand; When starting the primary component through: *$ sudo service mysql bootstrap* or, *$ sudo service mysqld start --wsrep-new-cluster* ( Essentially same, as bootstrap differs to *start --wsrep_new_cluster *) The bootstrap sequence correctly calls mysqldsafe, as below */usr/bin/mysqld_safe --datadir=/datadrive/galera/mysql --pid-file=/datadrive/galera/mysql/ciq-test-db01.pid --wsrep-new-cluster* However, it then gets stuck in the *wait_for_ready() function of /etc/init.d/mysql* The sequence tries to ping mysqladmin through: * if $bindir/mysqladmin ping >/dev/null 2>&1; then* *log_success_msg* * return 0* *elif kill -0 $! 2>/dev/null ; then* * : # mysqld_safe is still running* *else* * # mysqld_safe is no longer running, abort the wait loop* * break* It gets stuck here as the test: * if $bindir/mysqladmin ping >/dev/null 2>&1; then* Always fails and the counter keeps increasing till 900 and Error's out with the *log_failure_msg* *return 1* Test: I tested that line from the console as: *$mysqladmin ping >dev/null 2>&1* and, was thrown the following error: *mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed* *error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2 "**No such file or directory")'* *Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' exists!* Obviously, '*/var/lib/mysql' *does not exist in my setup, and the socket file was at *'/datadrive/galera/mysql/mysql.sock'* But, my socket can be passed explicitly to *mysqladmin *by doing, *$mysqladmin --socket=**/datadrive/galera/mysql/mysql.sock ping* This actually worked as expected and I got the desired output, *mysqld is alive* Solution: ----------- What I surmised through my novice abilities was that the init script was not passing the variables it read from */etc/my.cnf.d/server.cnf to mysqladmin* So, for now I have done a hackjob by altering the init script function wait_for_ready() with the test: *if $bindir/mysqladmin --socket=/datadrive/galera/mysql/mysql.sock ping >/dev/null 2>&1; then* * log_success_msg* * return 0* And voila, *$ sudo service mysql start* *$ sudo service mysql start --wsrep-new-cluster* *$ sudo service mysql bootstrap* All above works. It is evident that I should be passing all the variables from */etc/my.cnf.d/server.cnf *that *mysqladmin *needs to set it's environement correctly. However I think that this could be / should be done on the pre-distributed init script itself rather than a user-side hack. While I have tried to be thorough in my inspection of the issue, I may have missed either something very basic or inherently complex that's currently is inherent to the process of initializing the mysql service.
