As described in this Blog http://mablomy.blogspot.dk/2016/04/check-constraint-for-mysql-not-null-on.h…. A very nice hack/trick IMO. However it is not working with MariaDB as VC's cannot be declared NOT NULL. What prevents that? -- Peter -- Webyog

As Sergei said, MariaDB 10.2 has CHECKs. In old versions, honestly I don't like your solution. Take a look at what locks will be set: https://www.percona.com/blog/2006/12/12/innodb-locking-and-foreign-keys/ You can use trigger instead. When you only want to execute a check like this, triggers are not slow. Just SIGNAL an error is the value of i_must_be_between_7_and_12 is not valid. But those people can't use Galera, pt, Xtrabackup... If we care about Windows, that software should be ported first, because it's general purpose. Hi All, I have the below topology: Master -> Slave (using GTID replication) Master -> Maxscale (Binlog Router) Maxscale -> DR Site (via binlog router) my.cnf is same across all sites: lower-case-table-names=1 autocommit=0 #replication variables log-bin=binlog binlog-format=ROW replicate_annotate_row_events=OFF binlog_annotate_row_events=OFF I have created a table and I could see on slave DB as well as at DR Site DB. When I INSERT records, this is not shown up in Slave DB as well DR Site DB. I have checked replication status and both are sync with master server binlog pos. But the rows reflected in slave and DR site DB only when we COMMIT on both Slave as well DR site DB. Below when I try at Slave DB: MariaDB [dr_repl]> select * from test_dr_repl; Empty set (0.00 sec) MariaDB [dr_repl]> commit; Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.00 sec) MariaDB [dr_repl]> select * from test_dr_repl; +----+------+ | id | val | +----+------+ | 1 | 1 | | 2 | 2 | | 3 | 3 | +----+------+ 3 rows in set (0.00 sec) I am wondering whether I did any weird mistake. Hi all, So basically everyone would love, love, love to have external languages for stored procedures, but no one is working on it... so bad. Please consider something: 1- Some features could be implemented as stored procedures, it's much easier. This has been done in the past (Flexviews, Securich...) but SQL is too limited. 2- I am sure that a lot of people would implement procedures libraries if they could use something like JavaScript or PHP. If we could use Python, stuff like NumPy and SciPy could be used. 3- SQL limitations could be lifted (namespaces for global objects, arrays, argv, cursors based on a prepared statement...) but will you ever do it? Probably not. But if we have external languages, who cares about procedural SQL limitations. I believe that next releases features are selected based on their cost (not only that of course). But please consider points 2 and 3, and try to estimate the cost of features that the community can develop for you, plus the cost of features that won't be really needed anymore if external languages are available (arrays in SQL). May be InnoDB will use FRMs in 10.3, may be it will not. MyISAM most probably will continue use them. SET PERSIST - and this is my personal opinion - this needs to be thought over *very* carefully. There have been quite a few security vulnerabilities with my.cnf stored in the datadir, and that's why since 2005 the server no longer reads my.cnf in the datadir. But mysql_safe still does - and there have been new security vulnerabilities *last month*, caused by my.cnf in the datadir. And finally both MySQL (in 5.7?) and MariaDB (in 10.2) stopped reading my.cnf in the datadir for real. So, having my security(a)mariadb.org hat on, I look at SET PERSIST with a lot of suspicion, because it's nothing else than another attempt of storing server configuration information in the datadir and have it writable by the server itself. Hi Sergei! I moved this back to the mailing list, because of your .FRM explanation, and also because I'd like to explain rasters. A GIS raster is an array of data represented as a raster image. Rasters have "layers" and each layer can have a different measurement in it. It is most commonly used for height maps. The pgsql schema that I sent you is for a personal project of mine that uses Voxel.js (http://voxeljs.com/) to turn real world height maps from the space shuttle (SRTM v3 data) into interpolated 1 meter resolution voxel (minecraft-like, as 1 block = 1 sq meter) landscapes. I intersect the raster data with the GIS data from OSM (open street map) so that I can render buildings, roads, forest areas, rivers, etc, somewhat correctly (overpasses, underhangs, and missing building heights cause significant problems.). The ST_PixelsAsCentroids or ST_PixelsAsPoints can be used to get the specific value for a band in the raster, such as the height in a specific 30sq meter area (for the 1 arcsecond resolution of the SRTM data). First, let me clarify everything here is MariaDB - nothing actually involving the MySQL code. In Arch Linux, I'm running a MariaDB server and client. I installed the mariadb package, built from the source at: http://ftp.heanet.ie/mirrors/mariadb/mariadb-10.1.18/source/mariadb-10.1.18… This provides: - /usr/include/mysql/* (141 .h files) - /usr/lib/libmysqlclient.so - /usr/lib/libmysqld.so (I see this is for embedding a MariaDB server in an application which I don't need, so I'll ignore that for the rest of my message.) I have C++ applications that will access MariaDB, and I thought I also needed mariadb-connector-c, so I built tag v2.3.1 at https://github.com/MariaDB/mariadb-connector-c This provides: - /usr/include/mariadb/* (40 .h files) - /usr/lib/mariadb/libmariadbclient.a - /usr/lib/mariadb/libmariadb.so Q1 - What's the purpose and difference between libmysqlclient, libmariadbclient, and libmariadb? (Ignoring difference shared vs static library.) Q2 - /usr/include/mysql/mysql.h (from http://ftp.heanet.ie/mirrors/mariadb/mariadb-10.1.18/source/mariadb-10.1.18…) and /usr/include/mariadb/mysql.h (from tag v2.3.1 at from https://github.com/MariaDB/mariadb-connector-c) Are quite similar and have a lot of identical code, but are also way different. I ran into that /usr/include/mysql/mysql.h defines: const char * STDCALL mysql_error(MYSQL * myql); But /usr/include/mariadb/mysql.h defines: char * STDCALL mysql_error(MYSQL *mysql); (Note the missing const on the return value.) I got very confused at this point why the same function is declared in each, why they're different, which I should be using, etc.

I wonder how to use sharding with symmetric replication... Does that mean I have to partition every database instance? Does it work with third-party tools, like Vitess (http://vitess.io/)? Thanks
