See the task description MDEV-4397 and the corresponding pages in the SQL-99, Complete, Really - we tried to make our implementation very close to the standard. Perhaps, the page should mention that roles were implemented as a GSoC 2013 project by a student Vicentiu Ciorbaru. But in this case PCRE pages should mention GSoC and the student name too.
