I did an update on my package manager and it seems that mysqld_safe was removed from the system, and I have that integrated into my openrc init system. Has it stopped being supported?

you failed to mentioin distribution, versions and package sources you are using
these days init-systems have native solutions to restart a failed daemon instead implement that redundant in each and every service - on Fedora mysqld_safe is not needed for 7 years now with a proper service-unit
