[Maria-discuss] Connect Engine with ODBC
Hi, I've been experimenting with the new Connect engine and the ODBC table type. I've installed MariaDB 10.1.17 on a test machine. I have an ODBC diver connected to a C-ISAM database. I am able to use this ODBC to connect from a MS Access 2013 database and despite some restrictions related to the C-ISAM DB it works well I have also been able to connect successfully from MariaDB and create connect tables. The only issue I'm having with the ODBC table type is the lack of indexes. However, I have noticed that in the MariaDB documentation accessible from https://mariadb.com/kb/en/mariadb/connect-table-types-odbc-table-type-access... there is a note :- "Version 1.04 (from MariaDB 10.1.6<https://mariadb.com/kb/en/mariadb-1016-release-notes/>) adds remote indexing facility to the ODBC table type." As I've now installed 10.1.17 on my test machine, would someone be able to provide more information on the status of remote indexing, how it works and on how I may be able to make use of this? I am using HeidiSQL (Vers. 9.1.0.4867) as a front end tool and when I try to create indexes for the connect tables I get a message "SQL Error (1105): Table type ODBC is not indexable". Kind Regards, Bruce Carlson
Hi Bruce, There is no 10.1.17 version of MariaDB. You might be getting confused... Either you have 10.0.17 installed, or 10.1.7. Could you make sure of that? On Thu, Nov 19, 2015 at 1:04 AM Bruce Carlson <Bruce.Carlson@nepean.com> wrote:

I think you’ve installed MariaDB Server 10.0.17, since there is no current release of MariaDB Server 10.1 that high yet. The latest release is MariaDB Server 10.1.8, and you can download/install that, and what you want should in theory work see: https://mariadb.com/kb/en/mariadb/what-is-mariadb-101/ Hope that 10.1.8 solves your problems! cheers, -colin -- Colin Charles, Chief Evangelist, MariaDB Corporation blog: http://bytebot.net/blog/ | t: +1-347-903-3201 | Skype: colincharles | Twitter: @bytebot
Hi Colin, Yes sorry a typo it's actually version 10.1.7. I like testing the beta versions as much as I can. I was running 10.1.6 64 bit on windows 7 64 bit OS but could not connect to the 32 bit ODBC for the old CISAM DB so I installed 10.1.7 32 bit and so far I'm impressed Just can't get remote indexing to work but that could be because I don't have enough knowledge on the subject. But I'll try what you have suggested and have a look at 10.1.8. Thanks for testing Bruce! It's worth noting that 10.1.8 has been GA for about a month now. It indexing isn't working as expected, please file a bug -- MariaDB.org/jira Thanks again Bruce. On Friday, 20 November 2015, Bruce Carlson <Bruce.Carlson@nepean.com> wrote:

Thanks for that Colin, I’ll load 10.1.8 and have a go at that. From memory I think 10.1.7 was the latest available at the time. Before I log any bug report though, I’m not sure if I’ve been trying the right method. I’ve been trying to add indexing after creating the connect tables. I’ll have a go at adding the indexing to the create statements and see how that goes.
