To focus back on the original question,
would it be interesting to define dynamically the buffer pool size
on a similar fashion as the Windows installed does when installing
MariaDB using packages on Debian/Ubuntu (or other applicable
distros that shows dialog when installing packages from an
interactive shell) as it already show a dialog for the root
password?
I think that asking for a similar question as the "Optimize for
transactions" of the Windows installer might also be of interest.

MSI installation defaults to 1/8 of RAM for the Innodb
bufferpool. You can change this value during the installation, see
