I don't think you're seeing tablename.myd-date or tablename.myd.bak, you're seeing tablename.myd-datetime.bak These come either from using myisamchk with the --backup option or from starting the server with BACKUP (or BACKUP_ALL) in the --myisam-recover-options option.
