I have installed MariaDB 5.3 from the apt packages on a lenny amd64
machine. Initial setup went fine and the database is working
correctly. When I give some load to the machine I get crashes about
every 8 minutes.

Segfault. Very simply, that indicates a bug.

Please file it in the bugs section, including the log with backtrace and other info as you did here.
Then devs can work on it.
