You need to make us of wsrep_node_name and make sure the gcomm address matches the name given in wsrep_node_name.

I am trying to use dns hostnames vs. ip addresses in mariadb container configuration:
--wsrep-cluster-address=gcomm://node1.cluster1.mesos,node2.cluster1.mesos..
--wsrep_node_address=node1.cluster1.mesos
--wsrep-new-cluster
..
but i see galera error:
WSREP: Failed to resolve tcp://node1.cluster1.mesos
The address "node1.cluster1.mesos" i can ping
64 bytes from node-x (10.10.30.1): icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.023 ms

Would it be possible to configure Galera to use dns names?

Hostnames should work. I would check if selinux isn't causing this.
