Hi, I noticed MySQL 5.6 has a validate_password plugin. Since it's open-source, can we add it to MariaDB 5.5. Or is that bad form, a hot potato, etc.? We need the features of this plugin in our environment, and the PAM integration is looking not a good "fit" (though it's working great). (I'm trying to get it to compile in right now, but it's having issues with the includes so far...working on it). Thanks, Adam C. Scott

[Maria-discuss] Serious problem with latest (10.0.16) Windows installer - destroys services.

I have MariaDB 5.5, 10.0 and 10.1 installed (as Windows services named 'maria55'. 'maria10' and 'maria10_1' ) and always update them to latest soon after an update is available. Yesterday morning I installed 10.0.16 on top of 10.0.15 using the .msi installer. When I tried to connect to it a few hours later it was not possible. I thought the service might not be running. It wasn't. Actually it did not exist anymore at all! "net start maria10" returned "service does not exist" (and indeed it did not appear in Windows "services management" interface). I copied the /datadir, uninstalle , did a fresh install of 10.0.16d (choosing the option not to upgrade any existing server) and copied the old /datadir back. Now Maria 10.0(.16) works again. But now I see that the 'maria55' service is also gone from the system. Files are intact. I can repeat the exercise I did with 10.0 of course or install service again from commandline. Not a big problem, but very annoying and waste of time. MariaDB 10.1 installaton is not affected. 5 diiferent Oracle/MySQL servers (from 5.0 to 5.7) also are not. I need all those instances for application testing. Questions: * Has somebody else experienced this? * Has somebody replaced @wlad as maintainer of Windows installers? @wlad was the only person who ever was able to write reasonable MySQL/MariaDB installers. So I would regret that. It is perfectly legal on Windows to have multiple MariaDB servers simultaneously running as Windows services. They won't conflict as long as service name, port, basedir and datadir are all different. What happens with one should not affect another. I am installing mariadb-10.0.15 on Fedora 20 from a binary tarball file. After several changes on .my.cnf file, I minimized the installation warning to three. I am using the default my-large.cnf file from the release. I've realized that by default MariaDB allow full access to a database for anon. users. $ mysql --user asdfasdf test MariaDB [test]> insert into test (sr) values (1); Query OK, 1 row affected (0.12 sec) I tried to revoke but -- Revoke all on test.test from ''@''; ERROR 1141 (42000): There is no such grant defined for user '' on host '%' Is there anyway to disallow all types of access to anon. users?

I am new to use mariadb on linux machine. I am using Fedora 20 and I have downloaded the mariadb 10.0.15 tar.gz file and its instruction. I removed the existing mariadb from my Fedora 20. I have installed the mariadb on my machine by following the official instruction. It seems successful (without error) but I cannot start it as expected. I also have few other basic questions. Some background information here: this database will be accessed by a local application. This local application may be running under a general user account, user1. I installed it in /var/local as a root user. Questions: 1. How to uninstall it completely? I want to try again to see if I did anything wrong before. 2. Because it will be accessed by a local application and the local application will be running by a general user, user1, should I install it with user1? 3. Basically I am confused with these three users: user1, mysql and root. "user1" will be used to run the application and login the machine. "mysql" will be used to connect the mariadb. "root" will be used to install mariadb into /usr/local. Who will start the mariadb? It will be "root", I guess. But if "root" starts the service, "user1" and "mysql" don't have problem to access its resources? 4. If I don't want to install it as root, can I still install it under the /usr/local directory? 5. I renamed the my-large.cnf to .my.cnf and uncomment the InnoDB table section. Is this only change I need to make if I want to use InnoDB? should I disable the myisam? how? 6. where should I put the .my.cnf file? put into the home directory of the user who starts the mariadb or the user who logon the system if they are different? 7. there is a my.cnf file from the Fedora 20 installation, when I start mariadb without the "--defaults-file=~/.my.cnf" option, I will get the following error from the log: [ERROR] mysqld: Can't create/write to file '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid' (Errcode: 2 "No such file or directory") I have to manually create the mysqld folder inside the /var/run folder each time after reboot. how to avoid this? 8. Hi all, We have custom logic in place that “suspends” a MySQL user by: - reversing the password hash - replacing the leading “*” with “-” In other words (pseudo-code): my $hash = SELECT password FROM mysql.user WHERE user = 'theuser'; $hash = $hash.replace(/^\*/,"").reverse(); UPDATE mysql.user SET password = "-$hash" WHERE user = 'theuser'; I have noticed that MySQL’s SHOW GRANTS reports these “suspended” password hashes with the leading dash “fixed” to a leading asterisk. MariaDB 10, though, has SHOW GRANTS report the literal contents of mysql.user. Is this behavior by design in MariaDB 10? Is it behavior that we can depend on moving forward? -FG

[Maria-discuss] Mariadb galera tolerance to network and io latency

Recently we observed that when network and IO latency increased significantly (and correspondingly, that bandwidth reduced significantly) all nodes in a 3-node mariadb galera cluster reported the other nodes as partitioned. We understand that by default galera is configured to wait 6 seconds before declaring other nodes partitioned. Is there any additional documentation on the performance on mariadb/galera with respect to network/IO latency and bandwidth? Are there hard limits beyond which a cluster is known to fail, and soft limits which are known to degrade performance? Thanks, Rob and Lyle Cloud Foundry Core Services
