We need this ASAP because we get complains from developers that they can't use bzr to create download MariaDB source because it takes way too long and often fails in the middle of the process.

Since Colin asked on IRC, let me add that (I think) the root of this problem is this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bzr/+bug/407834 (so I can confirm it is a real problem!) - Kristian.
