There is one thing we didn't specify - in which MariaDB version do you want the feature? If you want just a patch, then it could be in any version, but if you'd like it to be in a released version, then it should be in 5.5.
If you want it to be both in an older version, and in 5.5, then there will be slight differences IMO because in 5.3 there are few new join algorithms, and the related code has changed.
