Re: About Release Model

You've said that it's unclear how the release model works, when we release what and where a feature can go.
I've documented the current release model in the knowledge base, https://mariadb.com/kb/en/mariadb-release-model/ would you like to take a look and see if it answers your questions?
This is a fine overview page, and if this info was not previously available, then it's surely good to have it documented. However, it doesn't help explain how to meaningfully participate as a core developer in the releases. Where does the discussion happen about the progress and planning of the release, and addressing problems? How to partipate in those discussions? How to push a patch into a preview release, or a release, how to make a release? Etc. My assumption is that this is all restricted to employees? But even that isn't explained on the page. - Kristian.

That page is supposed to document the current release model for users. I've also created another page, https://mariadb.com/kb/en/mariadb-quality-development-rules/ but it's still an on-going discussion and also doesn't quite answer your question, I'm afraid. But it mostly does, I think it'd be easier to extend it than to create a yet another page. /Sergei

Ok, thanks for the other link.

One detail I noticed in this page (documenting the release model for users) is the mention of "RC" and "GA" releases, which can maybe be clarified. As I understand it, 11.3.0 was released in September as a "preview" release. And in November, 11.3.1 will be released as an "RC" release. Then in February, May, August, ... there will be patch releases 11.3.2, 11.3.3, 11.3.4, ... of the 11.3 series, until a total of 5 scheduled GA patch versions of 11.3 have been released ("An innovation release is maintained for one year after the first GA release"). It is not clear from the page if the first GA release will necessarily be 11.3.2 in February (following a "time-based release model" for GA), or if 11.3.2 can be either an "RC" or a "GA" release depending on some criterias of quality of the release. From checking the release history of the last few release series, it looks like the first scheduled patch version after RC is always a GA release. If so, this could be clarified, for example: "Every scheduled patch version after the first RC release is a GA release" Hope this helps, - Kristian.
