Hello! Do you want to improve MariaDB in Debian? Do you want to contribute to Debian packaging using modern git-buildpackage tools and state of the art QA tools? Do you want to see the result of your work in the hands of numerous of Linux users who run Debian and MariaDB? I am happy to mentor anybody who want's to start contributing to Debian packaging of MariaDB. I have created some items with priority "wishlist" and title prepended with "TODO" visible at https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?src=mariadb-10.0#_0_6_4 These are all farily easy tasks that anybody interested in contributing could pick up and and start working on. [Maria-developers] Please review MDEV-8092 Change Create_field::field from "const char *" to LEX_CSTRING

Hi Serg, Please review a patch for MDEV-8092. Thanks. Perhaps something interesting, about #3 in the task description. I added a debug output and collected some statistics for "mtr --suite=main", to check how these changes can potentially affect another task: MDEV-7954 my_strcasecmp_utf8() takes 0.19% in OLTP RO Here are the results: my_strcasecmp_utf8() is now called 18,709,905 times total during "mtr --suite=main" 9,200,498 of those are called to compare Field/Create_field names in Column_name::eq_name(). And 3,855,751 calls of my_strcasecmp_utf8() are now optimized away, because eq_name() immediately return "false" if the two name lengths are different. So before this change there were 18,709,905 + 3,855,751 = 22,565,656 calls of my_strcasecmp_utf8(). Looks roughly like 17% improvement in name comparison.

[Maria-developers] Documentation for new features

Hi I quite often find out about a new feature after release, either by looking through the changelog and commits, or because someone points out it's missing from the documentation. It's time-consuming trying to keep track of every change, and I miss things (especially in non-default plugins etc), so it'd be better if everyone can remember the need for documentation when adding new features/variables or changes in behaviour. Each task of this sort in JIRA could have a related documentation subtask. You can add to the knowledgebase directly (don't worry about bad English, I will fix), email me with details, or at least alert me about an impending change. thanks, ian

Hello! While working on MDEV-9259 I did some comparisons about what files in general are created by the build but which are missing from the Debian packaging. The list is below. [Maria-developers] Student looking to contribute to MariaDB

Hello everybody, I am a third year student looking to contribute towards MariaDB for the upcoming Google Summer of Code program. I am very proficient in C++, Java, Python and Scheme. I have done some projects in machine learning as well as NLP. My exposure to databases is limited to an undergraduate course on Database systems. What level of knowledge would I need to contribute to the project? What sort of project would be appropriate for my skill set? Thank you, Rishab Jaju.

I believe the point was not to treat fill_help_tables failure as fatal. To keep this logic you can merge maria_add_gis_sp and fill_help_tables in one mysqld_install_cmd_line invocation. [Maria-developers] Option to _not_ disable semisync on slave timeout?

Hi Jonas (or anyone else who may know), If I understand correctly, semisync replication has a timeout for how long it will wait for a slave to acknowledge transactions. If the timeout is exceeded, semisync is turned off on the master. Do you know if there is a facility to avoid semisync being turned off automatically in this case, maybe instead fail and roll back the master transaction? I was thinking at Google you might already have needed and implemented this (merged or not merged into MariaDB yet), or you may be aware of a patch by someone else for this? [Maria-developers] ABI breakage in Connector/C sometime between 2.0.0 and 2.2.2

While preparing Debian packaging for MariaDB Connector/C version 2.2.2, I noticed that there's an ABI breakage without a corresponding change of SONAME: version 2.0.0 had a symbol "get_tty_password@Base" whereas version 2.2.2 doesn't. I'm wondering how big of a breakage it is - i.e. is that something that was never meant to be in the API/ABI in the first place, or is an oversight? I'm also wondering whether it's worth renaming the Debian package from libmariadb2 to libmariadb2a because of this. -- Daniel Schepler
